The Ombudsman, Erinda Ballanca, accompanied by the Commissioner for the Prevention of Torture, visited the former president of the country, Ilir Metaj, in detention cell 313. Ballanca and the Commissioner listened closely to the claims of the former head of state, who has raised allegations regarding the manner of his arrest, considering it to be a kidnapping.
Based on the complaint, an administrative investigation was launched by the Ombudsman institution and during these months, since October 2024, when the leader of the Freedom Party was arrested, information has been requested from the State Police regarding the operational plan for the arrest of Ilir Metaj.
The former president claims that he was kidnapped in a bandit manner on the orders of Edi Rama, and the police behaved barbarically, not even informing him that there was a court order for his arrest.
The Ombudsman and the Commissioner closely observed the conditions in which Ilir Metaj is being held, while information was obtained regarding the punitive measures against Metaj in the cell, isolating him from activity.
The Ombudsman is expected to issue a detailed report regarding the former president's claims.
Ilir Metaj has been detained by order of SPAK since October 2024. He has been charged with corruption, money laundering, and concealment of assets.
On August 4, he is expected to appear at the Special Prosecution Office together with his lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, where he will be informed of the closure of the investigations and then the criminal file will be submitted in the fall for trial.
Last week, charges were filed against his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, Fatima Kryemadhi, the mother of the MP, Ema Çoku, and Pirro Xhixha.
