The European Union Delegation in Tirana has reacted to the new draft amendments to the Criminal Code, expressing serious concerns about their compliance with European human rights standards.
The EU delegation states that it was not part of the expert group that drafted these amendments and emphasizes that it is currently reviewing the proposals. According to them, some of the provisions may violate the fundamental rights of citizens, including freedom of expression and the media.
"These provisions are not in line with EU standards. We are confident that, within the framework of the consultation process and membership commitments, these concerns will be addressed," the statement said.
The EU stresses the need for an inclusive and transparent consultation process with key justice institutions, civil society and rule of law actors, with the aim of ensuring the highest quality of legislation.
In the framework of the accession negotiations, Albania is expected to approximate its criminal legislation to that of the EU. The delegation underlines that priority should be given to changes related to the decriminalization of defamation, the fight against drug trafficking, human trafficking, child abuse, firearms and money laundering.
The EU expresses its readiness to provide technical assistance during this reform process.
