Endri Shabani was elected People's Advocate today, amidst opposition contestation, flare-ups in the hall, and a stance with his hands in his pockets, as if to remind us that seriousness in the Albanian state has long since ended.
In a tense session, the new Ombudsman did not forget to send a kiss to the 35 opposition deputies, who proposed his name with their signatures, to be voted on by the majority a few days ago in the plenary session.
Endri Shabani's name caused fierce debates between the majority and the opposition, which had apparently reached a deal on the candidacy behind the scenes, while each side seemingly played the role of the upset one.
After the vote, Sali Berisha hinted that Edi Rama "should celebrate" Shabani as People's Advocate. But the democrats' revolt on social media seems to have forced him to change his stance and comply with Gazment Bardhi's request to take the procedure for his election to the Constitutional Court.
