The voting process for the election of the chairman of the Democratic Party of Albania branch in Elbasan began this Sunday.
Voting began at 08:00 at the party headquarters in the city and will continue until 18:00, while DP members are expected to elect the new branch leader through a race involving five candidates.
In the race for the leadership of the DP branch in Elbasan are Durim Çekrezi, Elior Vila, Lumturi Hasa, Sokol Shkëlzeni and Alis Narazani.
Durim Çekrezi is currently the acting chairman of the branch, a position he assumed after the withdrawal of MP Blendi Himçi, who was confirmed as a candidate for the May 2025 parliamentary elections. Çekrezi is an engineer by profession and previously headed the Tregan Administrative Unit.
Also in the race is lecturer Elior Vila, who in his platform has emphasized the need for a more open Democratic Party with greater involvement of professionals.
Lumturi Hasa, a doctor and former candidate for MP in the 2025 parliamentary elections, is the only woman in this race. She comes from the ranks of the Party for Justice, Integration and Unity and aims to strengthen the party's structures with more inclusion of young people and women.
Also on the list is Sokol Shkëlzeni, political secretary of the Democratic Party in Elbasan for years, who aims to take over the leadership of the branch after a long commitment to the Albanian right.
The fifth candidate is Alis Narazani, a former candidate for MP in the 2025 parliamentary elections, who represents a younger generation within the party and is focused on expanding support for the DP in the city.
The election process is taking place at the party headquarters in Elbasan and a significant turnout of members has been reported in the first hours. After the closing of the voting, the counting of votes is expected to begin immediately.
