Albania is an autocracy. No, it is not a title of the next Freedom House report or a State Department resolution. It is the conclusion that, according to DP MP Besart Xhaferi, American partners have quietly but clearly accepted, during a meeting he held with young members of parliament.
In an interview with A2CNN, Xhaferi said that he was asked by US representatives about his expectations from parliamentary life. His answer was blunt: “There are none.” And then he explained: “Today Rama is also the mayor of all of Albania.” In the same vein, he emphasized the need for territorial reform and open lists, while the conversation did not touch on the opposition leadership.
According to Xhaferi, American diplomats did not articulate it openly, but admitted it between the lines: Albania is an autocracy. Apparently, the frightened embassy has found the new DP MP to deliver coded messages.
