The 102 containers of toxic waste from the Kurum company are being moved from Porto Romano to another location. The relocation is being carried out by the Seized and Confiscated Assets Management Agency, as the place where they were left for storage is part of the Porto Romano New Commercial Port project, which currently remains only on paper.
The process is taking place under strict safety measures, due to the high risk posed by the waste.
The containers were initially headed to Thailand, but were turned back after the Basel Network raised the alarm that the waste was toxic. Following investigations by the Durrës Prosecutor's Office, 35 security measures have been signed.
Officials of the Kurum company, as well as representatives of the Sokolaj company: Gjovana and Don Sokolaj, and Oliziana Pemati, have been declared wanted.
Waste smuggling is considered one of the biggest environmental scandals uncovered to date in the country.
