Journalist Klodiana Lala, during a statement on the show "The Unexposed" on MCN TV, revealed details about the seizure in Albanian territory of several sophisticated eavesdropping devices, introduced by three Italian citizens, two of whom were Guardia di Finanza officials.
According to Lala, the three Italian citizens were allowed to leave for Italy, while the equipment was kept in Albania and seized by the authorities. The prosecution has launched an investigation, but so far there has been no official reaction and the incident, according to the journalist, has been kept secret.
"This is a major scandal that is taking place in the territory of Albania. These are sophisticated wiretapping devices and are located in the premises of the Durrës Prosecutor's Office. I learned about the case on Saturday. It has been confirmed to me that three people had traveled on the Bari-Durres ferry and had arrived at the Port of Durres on Friday. They have been in Albania for about 12-13 hours and are suspected of having carried out illegal, unauthorized wiretapping, without having a joint team," said Lala.
According to her, the three citizens were detained as they were about to leave on the Durrës-Ancona ferry. They introduced themselves as Guardia di Finanza employees, and verifications have shown that two of them were indeed such. It is not known whether they had authorization from their superiors, while the third person turns out to be a collaborator contacted for the use of the equipment.
All three were questioned and then allowed to leave for Italy. The equipment has been blocked and is expected to undergo expertise. The Prosecution has appointed a prosecutor, while the Police have referred the case for two criminal offenses: illegal wiretapping and smuggling of contraband goods.
Lala recalled that Albania has previously had suspicious cases with eavesdropping devices, including the case of the IMSI Catcher device and two other cases blocked at the entrance or exit of the country.
According to the journalist, the current case is even more worrying because two of the people are Guardia di Finanza officials. "They usually move on issues related to organized crime or politicians who may be related to it. Who was wiretapped, what was the itinerary and what happened to the results of the wiretaps, this must be clarified by the Prosecutor's Office. The silence of the authorities makes the scandal even bigger. Why were these people allowed to leave? At least they could have been kept with their passports blocked until the equipment was examined," said Lala, among other things.
