UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern about the escalation of the military confrontation between the United States and Iran, particularly attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran and the region.
His spokesman, Farhan Haq, stated that attacks on civilian objects are "unacceptable" and that the UN chief calls for an immediate reduction in tensions.
The statement comes after US attacks on five bridges and several areas in southern and southeastern Iran, on the sixth consecutive night of strikes.
According to Iranian media, at least eight people have been killed and several others injured in attacks on areas such as Bandar Abbas, Bandar Khamir, Qeshm Island, Sirik and Iranshahr.
It is also reported that the attacks affected Iranshahr airport, damaging electrical facilities and a fuel tank, while a maritime control tower at Shahid Kalantari Port in Chabahar collapsed after a third attack.
Guterres has reiterated that the conflict between Washington and Tehran cannot be resolved through military force and has called for a return to diplomatic efforts.
According to the UN, any future agreement must also guarantee international freedom of navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategic energy transport points in the world.
