Russia is suspected of providing Iran with information about the positions of US forces in the Middle East, which could be used to attack US targets, the Washington Post reported, citing three officials familiar with the matter.
According to sources, since the start of the conflict last weekend, Moscow has sent Tehran data on the location of US military assets, including warships and aircraft.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information, said it was a broad data-sharing effort. However, the exact extent of Russian assistance remains unclear.
The sources point out that Iran's capabilities to identify American targets were impaired in the early days of the war, which makes this information particularly important for Tehran.
Since the start of the conflict, Iran has launched thousands of drones and hundreds of missiles against US military bases, embassies and civilian targets, while the joint US-Israeli military campaign has struck more than 2,000 targets on Iranian territory.
According to some analysts, a prolonged conflict between the US and Iran could bring geopolitical benefits to Russia, increasing oil revenues and shifting the West's attention away from the war in Ukraine.
