Two people were killed and dozens more were injured after a shooting near a beer garden in Austin, Texas, in an incident that the FBI says may be related to terrorism. The suspect has been identified by US media as Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized US citizen of Senegalese origin. Police, after responding to a call about an active shooter at around 2:00 a.m., shot and killed the perpetrator, bringing the death toll to three.
According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, the suspect first fired a handgun from an SUV at people on the sidewalk and outside Buford's, then got out of the car with a rifle and headed back toward the area, where he confronted police.
Authorities confirmed that no explosives were found in the vehicle, but FBI officials said elements were discovered that suggest a possible connection to terrorism. The investigation is still in its early stages and a motive has not been made public.
Of the 14 injured who were taken to the hospital, three are in critical condition. US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident, while federal and local officials have condemned the attack and praised the swift response of law enforcement.
