The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has decided to cancel a $500 million fund intended for the development of influenza and Covid-19 vaccines using mRNA technology. The decision affects 22 important projects, led by pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and Moderna.
Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his skepticism of vaccines, said that mRNA technology “presents more risks than benefits” in the case of respiratory viruses. He added that funding would be directed toward safer and more comprehensive vaccine platforms.
However, the scientific community has criticized Kennedy's statements, calling them unfounded and dangerous. Experts point out that mRNA vaccines have been widely tested, are considered safe, and are not responsible for naturally occurring virus mutations.
