A rocket attack has hit the United States Embassy in Baghdad, according to a senior Iraqi security official. An AFP (France Presse) journalist reported that black smoke was seen rising above the diplomatic compound in the center of the Iraqi capital after the explosion.
This is the second attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad since the escalation of the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran. According to the Associated Press, a rocket hit a helicopter landing pad inside the diplomatic complex, while AFP cites sources according to which the facility may have been hit by a drone.
The attack came shortly after two Iranian-backed fighters were killed in airstrikes in the Iraqi capital, AFP reported, citing sources. One of them is believed to have been a key figure in the network of groups linked to Tehran.
Meanwhile, several pro-Iranian armed groups, united under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance Movement in Iraq, have claimed responsibility for ongoing missile and drone attacks against US bases in the region. These attacks have intensified against the backdrop of rising tensions in the Middle East.
