British troops were attacked by Iranian drones at a military base in Iraq, British defense officials have revealed. UK air defense units shot down two drones, but others managed to evade defenses and hit the air base in Erbil, northern Iraq, on Wednesday evening.
This is the third recorded attack on British forces in recent times. It was preceded by a drone attack on the RAF base in Akrotiri, Cyprus, while a missile fell a few hundred meters from British soldiers in Bahrain.
Britain's Defense Secretary, John Healy, said Russia is helping Iran improve its drone tactics, which military officials warn are making attacks increasingly difficult to counter. "Nobody would be surprised to believe that Vladimir Putin's hand is behind some of the Iranian tactics and, perhaps, some of their capabilities," the British Defense Secretary said.
