During July 2025, the Federal Prosecution Service was notified by the federal judicial police of Brussels of a possible plot aimed at an assassination of Julien Moinil, the King's Prosecutor in Brussels. The main suspects are suspected of having criminal records related to organized drug trafficking and are believed to be active in Albanian criminal circles.
Prosecutor's spokeswoman, Yasmina Vanoverschelde, explained that over the past few months, the federal police, under the direction of a Brussels investigating judge and by order of the Federal Prosecutor's Office, have conducted in-depth investigations into any information received.
"Significant human resources of the federal police have been committed to this case for months. Even in the Federal Prosecutor's Office, several magistrates have been assigned to follow up on the investigation," she said.
On Tuesday morning, 18 checks were carried out in several areas, including Leuven, but mainly in Brussels.
"Eight people have been detained and are currently being questioned. After receiving the evidence, the investigating judge will decide whether they will remain in custody. At present, the plot to assassinate prosecutor Moinil cannot be confirmed or denied. The investigations are ongoing," Vanoverschelde added.
Federal Prosecutor Ann Fransen stressed the importance of increased protection for justice officials. “This investigation once again shows the urgent need to better protect police officers and magistrates who fight organized crime every day and therefore become targets of these criminal organizations,” she said. According to Fransen, the Minister of Justice has set up a working group, with the participation of magistrates from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, which is preparing new legal initiatives in this direction.
