Indonesia has become the first country in the world to block access to the artificial intelligence chatbot Grok, developed by Elon Musk's company, due to the risk of spreading fake pornographic content created with AI.
The Indonesian Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs stated that the use of sexual deepfakes without consent constitutes a “serious violation of human rights, dignity and security of citizens in the digital space.” According to her, the government has imposed the temporary blocking of Grok to protect women, children and the public from the dangers of fake pornographic content generated by artificial intelligence.
The decision comes a day after Grok limited image generation and editing functions to paid users on the X platform in an attempt to mitigate international criticism. However, this measure has been called insufficient by European authorities and digital rights organizations.
The British Prime Minister called this approach "insulting to victims", stressing that turning a tool that allows the creation of illegal images into a paid service is not a solution, but a worsening of the problem.
Meanwhile, several countries are considering imposing fines on Elon Musk, while Indonesia, with 285 million inhabitants and strict rules against online content, has summoned officials from the X platform for official clarification.
