Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has stated that his country openly buys oil from Russia, emphasizing that there is no other alternative for Hungary's energy supply.
According to him, the criticisms being made of Budapest are unfounded, as other European countries also buy Russian oil, but do so secretly through alternative channels, mainly due to the lower price.
Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs quoted the minister's words via the X platform, emphasizing:
“Minister Szijjártó warned against the hypocrisy of those who loudly attack Hungary and Slovakia, but secretly import the same oil via Asia.”
The statements were made during an informal Energy Council meeting in Denmark, where the issue of energy supply and dependence on Russia was widely discussed.
These comments reflect the great international pressure that Hungary is facing regarding its energy relations with Moscow and, at the same time, highlight the different practices of importing Russian oil from other EU countries.
