A serious incident rocked South Carolina State University on Saturday evening, where a woman was killed and a man was injured in a shooting during a concert held on campus, causing panic among students and attendees.
According to an official statement from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Directorate (SLED), the shooting occurred on campus. Authorities confirmed that the victim was a female, while the injured person is a male, who is under the care of doctors and is out of danger.
Police have announced that the identity of the victim has not yet been made public, while investigations into the incident are continuing intensively. “The shooting is not believed to be connected to two other similar cases, however, investigations will continue,” the SLED statement said.
Following the incident, the entire university campus was cordoned off, with security forces setting up security cordons around the area where the incident took place. Videos shared on social media showed a large presence of police and emergency vehicles within the university perimeter.
The university has issued an urgent notice to students, asking them to stay indoors and not move until further notice. It has also banned entry to campus for non-residents.
On the other hand, Republican MP Nancy Mace, through a statement posted on the "X" platform, expressed regret for the event and called for caution and cooperation with the authorities.
"Our hearts go out to the students, staff, and families affected. I urge everyone on campus to follow the instructions of law enforcement," Mace wrote.
The South Carolina Department of Law Enforcement has appealed for anyone with information regarding the incident to contact its offices immediately to assist in the investigation.
