The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has reacted to calls from some protesters demanding his arrest and accusing the opposition of collaborating with the government.
During the meeting of the DP Parliamentary Group, Berisha described the slogans "Berisha in prison, DP sold out" as positions incited by, according to him, "left-wing extremists" and "opposition opponents".
He stated that these calls should not affect Democratic Party supporters and accused their authors of serving the same purpose as Prime Minister Edi Rama, attempting to harm the opposition protest.
"On behalf of the DP and yours, I salute those tens of thousands of undefeated Albanians who continue the hurricane of freedom and I invite democrats in Tirana and throughout Albania to support this protest," Berisha said.
According to him, the protests against the government are a civic movement that aims for political change in the country. Berisha called on opposition supporters not to be influenced by slogans critical of him and the Democratic Party.
"Zero impact from the slogan of leftist extremists or oppositionists 'Berisha in prison, DP sold out'. No obstacle, because those who say these things demand at all costs to do Edi Rama's work for the protest," he said.
The democratic leader added that the protests will continue and described them as pressure on the government, stating that according to him they mark "the end of the worst ruler Albania has had in history after Enver Hoxha."
