The visit concluded with a ceremony at the US National Archives, where Trump accompanied Xi to view some of the most important documents in American history, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
The meeting between the two leaders took place on Thursday at the White House and lasted more than two hours. According to the Chinese side, Trump and Xi discussed bilateral relations, trade and artificial intelligence, while also exchanging views on important international issues, including the situation in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine and developments on the Korean Peninsula.
The issue of artificial intelligence was one of the important topics of the talks. Xi said that China and the US should continue the dialogue on the risks and benefits of AI, while Trump also spoke about the need for dialogue and cooperation in this area.
On the economic front, Xi said that teams from both countries had achieved new results in trade consultations. According to Chinese media reports, the Chinese president described the new trade agreement as a positive development for industries, citizens of both countries and the global economy.
During the visit, Trump and Xi sought to strike a more cooperative tone in relations between Washington and Beijing, despite ongoing disagreements over trade, Taiwan, technology and other strategic issues. Xi described the relationship as a process that should be based on dialogue and strategic stability, while Trump said the two countries can build a relationship that brings prosperity and security for future generations.
One of the highlights of the visit was the state dinner hosted by Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, for Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan. Among the guests were some of the most famous names in the world of technology and American business, including Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Jensen Huang, Sundar Pichai and Michael Dell. Also on the guest list was Bernard Arnault, the head of the LVMH group.
Trump also used the dinner to emphasize his personal relationship with his Chinese counterpart, while Xi spoke about the need for the two great powers to find a way to coexist and manage their differences.
At the end of the visit, Trump presented Xi Jinping with a statue of the bald eagle, the national symbol of the United States. Trump reportedly said the gift was designed in collaboration with Melania Trump.
Xi Jinping's visit to Washington was the first by a Chinese president to the White House in more than a decade and took place at a time when the US and China are trying to simultaneously manage economic and technological competition and global security issues.
