New York police arrested dozens of people, including actors and politicians, during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu near the United Nations headquarters.
Among those arrested were Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon and Emmy-winning actress Hannah Einbinder. Also arrested were Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier and New York City Council member Chi Ossé.
The protest took place before Netanyahu's speech to the UN General Assembly and was organized by the group "Jewish Voice for Peace." Demonstrators held banners with messages against the war and in support of Palestine.
According to police, the protesters were asked to leave after blocking an intersection near the UN headquarters. Some of them did not obey the order and continued the protest by sitting in the street, which led to the intervention of law enforcement and arrests.
At the same time, Netanyahu delivered his speech at the General Assembly, where he defended Israel's actions in the region. Dozens of delegates walked out of the hall as the Israeli prime minister began his speech.
