A serious incident has shocked the city of Brest in France and the Albanian community there, after a married couple from Korça were found dead inside their apartment. According to reports from the French police, it is a serious case of domestic violence that ended with two victims.
Andon Janaqi, 36, shot and killed his wife Anjeza Zeneli, 30, with a shotgun and then killed himself. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, around 4:30 p.m., when a resident of the area notified police that he had heard gunshots inside the building.
According to French media, the 3-year-old was inside the house at the time of the tragedy, while the older son was at school. French authorities announced that both children are currently being taken into the care of state social services.
Sources close to the investigation team confirm that the case is being treated as femicide, as the victim had reported only a few weeks earlier that she had been raped by her husband. On October 23, Anjeza Zeneli had reported Andoni to the police for physical and psychological violence, stating that he was extremely jealous. However, she later withdrew the complaint, expressing her desire for her husband to be rehabilitated and for the family to stay together.
Appeal from family members in Albania: "We have no economic means, help us bring the boy's body"
Andon's mother, Floresha Ilo, who lives in Korça, has requested the help of the Albanian state to bring her son's body to her homeland, as she has no economic means to travel or cover the costs of repatriation. Tearful and shocked, she declared:
"I need your help to bring my son here. I don't have money to go to France to get my son. I'm poor with a salary of 20 thousand lek, what can I do? They had been in France for 4 years, they were doing well with their house, with their cards, but they were having disagreements as a couple. The last time I spoke to my son was yesterday. He told me: 'Mom, I'm upset.' Then he hung up on me because his older son asked for his phone."
She added that after the event there was no communication with the bride's family and that she feels excluded by them.
Sister: "We want to bring our brother's body here. We also want to take the children to Albania"
The 36-year-old's sister, Paola Janaqi, has also sought support for bringing her brother's body to Albania and stated that the family intends to take care of their grandchildren.
"We have no conditions. Mom only has one salary, she has paid off her debts, she has nothing to do. We just want to bring our brother here. We spoke to my brother yesterday, he was very stressed. Today they just told us: 'Be strong, your brother is dead.' They have two children. They say the state will take the children. We want to raise the children here, one for us and the other for the grandmother."
Andon Janaqi and Anjeza Zeneli had moved to France four years ago and were staying there with regular documents. Despite appearing to be economically stable, sources from the Albanian community say that there had long been disagreements and tensions between them that occasionally became apparent.
