The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, and the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, will receive today the European Union Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, who is making her first official visit to Kosovo since taking office in 2024.
According to the official agenda, the EU Commissioner's visit will begin at 10:00 with a meeting with President Haxhiu at the President's Cabinet, where the media will have the opportunity to capture footage of the ceremonial reception.
Then, at 10:45, Commissioner Kos will hold a special meeting with the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti. After this meeting, a joint press conference is also planned, where issues related to the European integration process, political developments in the country and Kosovo's perspective in relation to the European Union are expected to be discussed.
The visit, which comes just three weeks before new elections in Kosovo, scheduled for June 7, is considered of particular political importance. The visit comes after a trip planned for March 12 was canceled due to the political situation at the time.
Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has repeatedly stressed the strategic importance of the Western Balkans' integration into the European Union, warning of destabilizing influences from external factors.
During a meeting of the Group of Friends of the Western Balkans in Bratislava, she stated that the non-integration of the countries of the region into the EU could create space for intervention by external actors.
"If we do not integrate our neighborhood into the European Union in this crazy geopolitical situation, where for the first time we have external destabilizing forces that would like to see us fail in the accession process, they could intervene and then use those countries against us, just as Russia is doing, for example, in Belarus, using migrants as a weapon against the EU," Kos said.
