The Hague Mechanism has rejected the defense's request for the release of former commander of the Army of the Republika Srpska of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ratko Mladic, who requested to be transferred to Serbia for medical treatment due to his serious health condition.
According to statements by his son, Darko Mladic, the Mechanism has argued that Mladic is receiving the necessary medical care and that he has the best possible doctors at his disposal in the institution where he is being held.
Media reports indicate that on April 10, Mladic suffered a stroke, and his health condition has further deteriorated, as he suffers from serious neurological, cardiovascular and nephrological problems. On May 2, he was transferred from the detention unit to a civilian hospital in The Hague, following suspicions of another stroke.
He has been in the detention hospital in The Hague since 2024. The Hague Mechanism has repeatedly rejected requests for his temporary release for treatment in Serbia.
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals sentenced Ratko Mladić to life imprisonment on June 8, 2021, finding him guilty of genocide in Srebrenica, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
