Richard Grenell called for the return to politics of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci. US President Donald Trump's envoy for special missions says that Thaci could take the post of prime minister in the future. His comments come at a time when Kosovo faces the possibility of new elections after President Vjosa Osmani's decree to dissolve parliament, a step that Grenell welcomed with joy, which was also clear in his post on the social network X.
"Excellent news. God is preparing us all for the return of Hashim Thaçi! Thaçi for prime minister," Grenell said.
Thaçi is currently in custody in The Hague, where he is facing charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, charges to which he has pleaded not guilty. His trial is currently nearing completion.
Grenell's comments come at a time of political tension in Kosovo, as the country faces an institutional crisis over the election of a president. Richard Grenell has previously been involved in political developments related to Kosovo. In November 2019, he was appointed by Trump, then in his first term, as special envoy for negotiations between Kosovo and Serbia.
In 2020, during that mandate, Kosovo and Serbia signed at the White House the agreement to normalize economic relations - known as the Washington Agreement - which, however, was never fully implemented.
