Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani announced that on Thursday she sent to the Assembly the constitutional amendments proposing that the president be elected directly by popular vote.
According to her, these amendments were drafted in 2011, but were never approved.
"DIRECT ELECTIONS FOR THE PRESIDENT! Seeing the successive failures in the election of the President, I have just submitted to the Assembly the constitutional amendments for direct elections of the President, which were drafted by the Commission for the Amendment of the Constitution in 2011. I invite all political parties to vote for these constitutional amendments. From now on, let the people speak!", Osmani wrote on Facebook.
Any constitutional amendment requires the approval of two-thirds of all members of the Assembly, including two-thirds of members representing communities.
Osman's initiative comes as she enters the final month of her presidential term. Meanwhile, the ruling party has not secured the signatures for a second term for her, after Glauk Konjufca's candidacy for the post of president was proposed.
