Kosovo Police has announced that its units, in coordination with the Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Government Commission for Missing Persons, conducted excavations in the cemetery of the village of Hajvali, Pristina, on October 20, and found human skeletal remains, suspected to be those of at least three people who went missing during the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo.
Police said the order was issued by the Basic Court in Pristina.
According to this institution, the mortal remains have been withdrawn by the Institute of Forensic Medicine for examinations and that the work will continue in the coming days.
During the 1998/99 war in Kosovo, around 13,000 people were killed, while over 1,500 remain missing.
Most of those killed were Albanian civilians.
Kosovo and Serbia reached agreement in 2023 on a Joint Declaration on Missing Persons, within the framework of the dialogue for the normalization of relations mediated by the European Union.
Among the commitments made were: full access to confidential information, including that with classified status; making available all documents relevant to determining the fate of missing persons, as well as joint work through a commission chaired by the European Union.
However, everything continues to remain on paper, as none of the points have been implemented.
