Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is headed to Washington for an official visit, where he will meet with US President Donald Trump on July 21.
According to a senior Lebanese official, the focus of the talks will be bilateral relations, the security situation, economic developments, and direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel.
The source announced that one of the main topics will be the implementation of the US-brokered framework agreement, which aims to strengthen the ceasefire and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese territories.
The meeting is also expected to discuss American support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, as well as the future of the UN peacekeeping mission UNIFIL, whose mandate expires this year.
Also on the agenda will be measures to help the Lebanese economy, which continues to face a deep financial crisis.
Aoun's visit comes after the sixth round of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, held in Rome with US mediation. In late June, the two sides signed a framework agreement that envisages a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories, while the Lebanese army will take responsibility for security in the liberated areas.
According to Lebanese authorities, since March 2, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have caused over 4,300 deaths and 12,200 injuries.
