The Minister of Justice, Besfort Lamallari, has announced that the Albanian Government will undertake an amnesty initiative at the end of this year, inspired by the principles of humanism, social justice and European standards.
According to the minister, the amnesty is part of a modern penal policy, which aims to rehabilitate convicted persons, reduce overcrowding in prisons and strengthen long-term security in society. This initiative is expected to benefit about 380 people with immediate release, while approximately 900 others will benefit from a reduction in sentence, bringing a reduction in prison population by about 7%.
Minister Lamallari emphasized that there are currently around 5,000 people in the penitentiary system, of whom more than half are in detention, a fact that has directly influenced the decision-making to implement this amnesty.
He underlined that the government's goal is to build a fair and functional justice system, which embodies the rule of law, respect for human dignity and European democratic principles, in line with Albania's commitments in the European integration process.
