An official request has been filed with the Democratic Party structures aiming to suspend Sali Berisha from the position of chairman and ban him from running in the upcoming elections for party leadership.
The document, signed by DP member Alesia Balliu, is addressed to the Presidency of the Democratic Party and the Appeal and Statute Evaluation Commission. It requests the termination of Sali Berisha's mandate as DP chairman, as well as the appointment of Secretary General Flamur Noka as acting chairman until a new leader is elected.
The request also requests the ban on Berisha's candidacy for the position of mayor in the elections of May 23, 2026, referring to decision no. 35 of the Presidency of the Democratic Party, dated March 17, 2026.
The request is based on Articles 46, 48, 50 and 54 of the Democratic Party Statute, while the text states that the electoral process must be conducted in accordance with the party's statutory rules and internal procedures.
According to the document, the elections for the chairman of the Democratic Party of Albania are set to be held on May 23, 2026, and instructions have been provided for the organization of the electoral process.
It remains to be seen whether the request will be considered by the Democratic Party structures. It is likely, as has happened in other cases, that it will not be considered by the DP. In this case, its author – who is seen as a rival of Sali Berisha and Ervin Salianj in the ambitions for the leadership of the party – is expected to go to court.
The irony is that it was the court that gave the DP seal and logo to Sali Berisha after his clash with Lulzim Basha. And this time the clash is related to the same article of the statute: the one that provides for the removal of the party leader after losing the elections.
