The Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime will conduct two important trials today related to well-known figures in Albanian politics.
The first trial session on the merits against former President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, his ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi and three other co-defendants is expected to be held at 11:00. In this process, Meta and Kryemadhi face charges of corruption, money laundering and concealment or failure to declare assets.
Former President Meta has announced that he will be present in the courtroom and has previously invited the foreign diplomatic corps in Tirana to attend the session, stating that during the process he will dismantle the accusations raised by SPAK.
Meanwhile, at 12:00, the same court is expected to hold a hearing on the merits of the trial against the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, his wife Ajola Xoxa, as well as 16 other individuals and 12 commercial companies or non-profit organizations.
The last hearing on the matter was held on April 15, but was postponed after the General Directorate of Prisons failed to comply with the court order to notify Veliaj. The mayor has requested that the court hearings be broadcast live to the media.
