Prime Minister Edi Rama has admitted that the measures to ban TikTok were a failure. In an interview with Politico, the head of government admitted that the ban has not completely solved violence in schools.
"It has been effective in building relationships with TikTok and in bringing in some protective measures that did not exist," Rama said.
He also ruled out the possibility of Albania supporting general social media restrictions for minors, calling them ineffective.
"This is nonsense. This is something that Albania will not consider. It does not work," Rama said.
The government decided to ban TikTok in March 2025 after about a year of talks with TikTok over online abuse. The fatal stabbing of Martin Can outside a school in Tirana was the final straw, and the government ordered internet service providers to block access to the desktop and app versions.
However, this action, apart from political debates, did not close the social network and, moreover, did not bring a solution to violence in schools, which continues to be present today.
