The General Directorate of Prisons has requested disciplinary action against Ilir Meta's lawyer, Kujtim Cakran, due to the permission he gave the former president to communicate with the media via his phone.
According to the Directorate, Cakrani violated the rules by allowing Meta to give an audio interview from the detention facility, where he has been held since October last year, accused of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets.
The Law “On the Rights and Treatment of Convicted and Detained Persons” requires that any form of communication between detainees, including phone calls and meetings, be approved in advance by the prosecutor in charge of the case. According to the Directorate, this rule was violated on July 1, 2025, when Cakrani, invited to a television show, allowed the interview via his phone.
The Directorate of Prisons emphasizes that it has not given any authorization for this communication, describing the action as an unacceptable intervention that undermines the order and authority of the detention institution. It warns that this case creates a dangerous precedent and violates legal provisions and ethical standards of the lawyer.
