The Constitutional Court suspended the holding of partial local elections in Tirana yesterday. In a statement to the media, the head of the Central Election Commission (CEC), Ilirjan Celiashi, announced that the process of preparing for the elections in the capital has been suspended, while for the other 5 municipalities – Vlorë, Berat, Tepelena, Cerrik and Mat – the process continues normally.
"Any action by the CEC related to the elections in Tirana has been suspended since November 9. The elections in the other 5 municipalities will take place as planned," said Celiashi, adding that the GJK's decision has the effect of temporarily suspending the decree for the elections in Tirana.
He also stressed that it is the Electoral College that will decide on the Socialist Party's appeal for the elections in Tirana. "The CEC has no say in this matter. We will await the decision of the Electoral College. Meanwhile, for the other 5 municipalities the process continues normally, and parties can present their candidacies and bring their commissioners," said the head of the CEC.
