The Democratic Councilor in the Municipality of Durrës, Dritan Burgija, has reacted publicly after the decision to expel him from the Democratic Party, stating that he was informed about the news through the media. In an interview for A2CNN, he said that he had welcomed the situation with sportsmanship, emphasizing that his contribution to the party cannot be denied by anyone.
"I learned about the news from the media. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I heard the news. I took it with sportsmanship because I know myself and there's no chance anyone will nullify my contributions to the Democratic Party," said Burgija.
Burgija harshly criticized the decision-making process within the party, emphasizing that he had supported Berisha's return so that meritocracy would be valued in the DP.
He added that he had not been officially notified by any party structure, either at the local or central level, before the decision was made. According to him, the current leadership structure is using its authority to expel members without reason and without transparency, comparing this situation to communist practices.
"I fought hard for the seal to go to Sali Berisha, not as a person, but for the DP to get back on track, to value meritocracy. But today we are faced with the fact that that seal is being used to expel democrats without reason and without facts. We returned to communism, when you were punished without knowing what for," Burgija added.
Burgija alluded that the expulsion could be related to his engagement in a political activity in Durrës, where he had publicly supported former MP Ervin Salianji.
