The President of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, congratulated Péter Magyar on his victory in the parliamentary elections in Hungary, describing the process as an example of democracy and expressing his readiness for cooperation with TISZA.
Berisha has not hesitated to draw a parallel with the political situation in Albania, comparing the difference between Viktor Orbán in Hungary and Edi Rama in Albania. In a long Facebook status, the leading democrat praises Orbán's stance on accepting defeat after 16 years in power, while accusing Rama of electoral manipulation.
"It is worth noting that, in stark contrast to Edvin Kristaq Rama, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not hold an electoral farce, but free and fair elections. He did not forgive voters two billion euros in fines and interest two days before the vote. He did not give pensioners "gifts" of 100 euros in exchange for their votes. He did not use criminal organizations and drug cartels to terrorize citizens and control their will. He did not decree the planting of 29 thousand hectares of cannabis for votes. His government did not build a caricature electoral commission like Albania's. Finally, Prime Minister Orbán did not put 90% of the country's media under control and did not block TikTok like Edi Rama," he writes, among other things.
All of Berisha's findings may be correct, however, the leader of the Democratic Party does not specify another fact that is essential for the reason why Hungarian citizens voted for TISZA, the role of new political figures and a party that was alternative. Since its chairman Péter Magyar, according to foreign media, is a young politician who has not exercised direct power and who built his party with experts, activists and new people in politics, with a platform focused on anti-corruption and pro-EU.
So, against a corrupt and long-standing government, a group of politicians was installed who had no real power in their hands and who were not tainted by corruption.
And it is not without purpose that Berisha avoids this aspect, because he knows very well that the rotation in Albania does not come only because of Rama's superpower, but also because of the numerous sins attributed to the opposition he leads.
Because the problem lies with him himself, who has led a party for 35 years and still does not let go, not asking about the statute or the democracy within it. Who has tried power several times as prime minister and not only, and has been accused and is being accused of corruption, while seeking to return to power again. With figures within the DP who are divided into two groups, those who have been part of the democrats' government and have also been rumored for corruption in the positions they have held and benefit from the favor they give the president, and the other part who is not capable of articulating an alternative for change, but strictly implements Berisha's orders. And lastly, a party leader who, in addition to being "non grata" by the strategic ally the USA, is not even heard by EU representatives.
Therefore, for Albanians to choose, they must also have an alternative that represents the opposite of the ruling party, so that they can truly trust it. And not choose between two political forces that, apart from the color of the flag, have no other difference between them.
