Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that Iran has reached an agreement with Oman on the route for ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz and that this strategic sea route can be reopened if the United States fulfills its commitments.
"We have agreed with Oman on the route of passage through Hormuz and, if the US fulfills its commitments under the memorandum of understanding, we will open the strait," Pezeshkian declared, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA.
The Iranian president said that the plan to pass through the strait has also been communicated to Iran's supreme leader. According to him, Tehran demands that the US fulfill its commitments to lift sanctions and blockade, unfreeze Iranian assets, launch investments and end the war in Lebanon.
Pezeshkian also said that the Supreme National Security Council had reached a broad consensus on the agreement, with 12 out of 13 members voting in favor.
According to the Iranian president, the agreement also included negotiations to unblock Iranian funds and investments that could reach $300 billion. However, he claimed that the agreement failed because the American side did not respect its commitments.
Iran and Oman have held talks on managing maritime transport through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transport routes.
Tehran has stated that it is ready to restore maritime traffic to previous levels if the conditions set out in the agreement discussed with Washington are met.
