China has raised the alarm for another possible flood near the border between Tibet and Nepal, as a lake created by a massive landslide risks overflowing its banks.
The warning comes just days after devastating floods in the same area on Wednesday, which scientists believe were caused by the collapse of a section of glacier near the Langtang Lirung peak. The mass of ice fell towards the river, creating a powerful wave of water and debris.
According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, the new lake had accumulated about 2.5 million cubic meters of water by Friday, with further inflows expected to raise the level. The situation worsened after an avalanche brought about 50,000 cubic meters of ice and other debris into the lake.
Chinese authorities issued warnings and began preparations for emergency evacuations. Due to the danger, search and rescue operations were temporarily suspended near Gyirong Port, one of the main land points connecting Nepal with China.
Later, Chinese state media reported that the immediate danger had been brought under control and rescue operations had resumed. Engineering teams are monitoring water levels and weather conditions, while drones are being used to transport equipment and supplies.
Experts warn, however, that the situation remains dangerous, as the ice masses and materials on the mountain slopes continue to be unstable. Heavy rainfall predicted for the coming days could further increase the lake level and the risk of further landslides.
Nepalese authorities have also warned of possible blockages along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, while residents have been asked to stay away from the banks until further notice.
Experts estimate that a possible overflow of the lake is not expected to be on the scale of Wednesday's disaster, but could cause erosion, new landslides and flooding in communities downstream.
Recent floods have caused severe consequences in the region, with hundreds of victims and many people still missing.
