Journalist Klodiana Lala has spoken about the scandal with the Kurum waste, which is suspected to be toxic, but there is still no result of the analysis.
Lala, invited to the show "The Unexposed" on MCN TV, stated that the investigations into this matter are being "buried" by the Prosecution and that there is no will to really investigate. Lala said that the Durrës Prosecution does not pass the file to SPAK.
"This is a file destined to be closed or more precisely, to be closed. Just like the Bankers affair, the Kurum company affair is an affair that involves all governments and very important people in Albanian politics. If Bankers has robbed us of our national wealth and Albanian citizens have not benefited at all, their wealth has been stolen, the Kurum case is even more serious, because Albanian citizens have been poisoned. Do you know where those 102 containers with suspected toxic and dangerous waste are? They are in Porto Romano, Durrës, and imagine what could happen with the changing climatic conditions and for months, they continue to remain there and instead of there being lightning speed from the Albanian state and from laboratories inside and outside the country to analyze these samples, what the containers contain and to resolve this issue, to destroy them or send them for export since it is a raw material that can be used in other countries like Thailand, in fact with Kurum, The prosecution will bury that issue once and for all, because the responsibility goes very high in the current and previous governments.
SPAK has not taken it up because it must declare the Durrës Prosecution Office incompetent, which it has not done so far. There has been a clash within the Prosecution Office on this issue. It has been waiting almost 6 months to find an expert. We have experts within the country, AKBN has refused to do it even though we have the capacity.
It took 6 months for a foreign laboratory to bring in experts to take the samples. We will probably wait 6 months to 1 year for the test results to come back.
We don't know where the tons of waste from the Kurum company went, what happened to them, no authority gives us an answer as to what happened, they could have been buried, they could have been disposed of within the country, causing toxins that are dangerous to health. We don't know what happened to the Sokolaj company.
The Kurum company has carried out the activity openly, I have not seen a detailed report from the environmental agency to analyze what happened. There have been actions and inactions. Sometimes an official may not necessarily be corrupt, but even by not acting, he may have abused his duty.
The Kurum case is a case that is heading towards degradation.
"The delay is allowing those involved to destroy evidence," Lala declared.
