A serious incident has shaken the Greek island of Crete today, where an armed clash between two families in the village of Vorizia, Heraklion, has ended in tragedy. According to Greek media, at least three people have lost their lives and around 15 others have been injured, some of them in critical condition.
The incident, which is being described as “a village at war”, is suspected to be the result of an ongoing feud between two families who have been in conflict for more than a year. Local media reports indicate that over 2,000 bullets were fired, while numerous police units and special forces were deployed to bring the situation under control.
Among the victims are a 50-year-old woman, a young man and another person, while the injured have been transported to Heraklion hospitals, as well as to the health centers of Moira and Agia Varvara. Due to the large number of injured, local residents have also used agricultural vehicles to transport them.
According to preliminary sources, the conflict originated in an incident that occurred a year ago, when an improvised explosive device was placed in a building under construction, causing material damage but no casualties. Today's incident is believed to be revenge for that attack.
Greek police have confirmed that several homes and vehicles were burned during the clash, while Kalashnikov bullets were scattered throughout the village. Among the injured are reportedly police officers who were at the scene to stop the escalation of violence.
