Just four days after the Supreme Court's decision to mitigate the measure against the former director of the Albanian National Academy of Sciences, Mirlinda Karçanaj, the request for freedom of former president Ilir Meta is also expected to be reviewed.
The request, filed a few days ago, will be reviewed on May 11, 2026 by Judge Etleva Deda. The former president is seeking to replace the measure of "prison arrest", where he has been since October 2024, with a lighter measure such as "property guarantee", "obligation to appear" or "ban on leaving the country".
The move comes at a delicate moment for the justice system, as the Karçanaj decision has raised debate over the possibility of a more lenient approach towards senior officials investigated or arrested by SPAK.
Only on May 4, the Special Court of Appeals had again rejected Meta's request for freedom, while previously all his attempts to mitigate the measure at all three levels of the judiciary had failed.
But now, after the Karçanaj precedent, attention has shifted to how the Supreme Court will deal with one of the most important political figures behind bars.
