Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has expressed support for lowering the minimum voting age from 18 to 16, as part of discussions on the country's new constitutional reform.
Magyar stated that he would support this change during the drafting of a new constitution, arguing that many young people under the age of 18 are already informed and capable of participating in democratic processes.
"Today, the vast majority of young people under 18 are sufficiently prepared and informed to have a voice in our shared decisions," he said.
The issue of lowering the voting age has sparked debate in several European countries. The United Kingdom has also announced that it is considering allowing 16-year-olds to vote ahead of the next general election.
If approved, Hungary would join a small group of countries that have extended voting rights to young people under 18.
