Today's tragedy in Durrës is not just another black statistic, but the chronicle of a premeditated murder where a drunk driver took two children's lives and left a third struggling with death. This terrible act did not begin at the wheel, but in the offices where the lives of citizens were exchanged for square meters of concrete, turning the city into a permanent mourning where every inch of land that should have belonged to children has been silently swallowed up. The reaction of Mayor Emiriana Sako, who speaks of "deep reflection" and pain "like a mother", sounds like the ultimate irony in a city where public spaces have been stolen with the full blessing of the Municipality. Her words are just a facade that attempts to cover up the lack of accountability for the massacre that has been done to Durrës over the years.
In this urban crime scene, the destructive role of Edi Rama's "Renaissance" has been decisive in the annihilation of public spaces, installing a model where the shiny facade is worth more than the safety of life. Under this political umbrella, Durrës was transformed into a concrete jungle, where the legacy of Vangjush Dako caused every flowerbed to shrink to extinction to become a construction site. Emiriana Sako simply followed the same path, allowing common spaces to be swallowed up by the interests of the towers, forcing children to play in places that were never intended for play. This is the failure of a state that prioritizes the pockets of those in power and not the protection of the youngest.
When a city loses its common spaces, it inevitably loses its safety, as the children of Durrës are now condemned to play on the sidewalks, in the streets and between cars because their sports fields have been turned into palaces. It is in this hostile environment that the tragedy occurred, proving that when children are forced to stand next to traffic, death is no longer a “random accident”, but a direct consequence of a reality consciously constructed by Dako and Sako. They chose concrete over life, ignoring every warning in favor of clientelist benefits.
This accident is the bloody seal on a governance model that sees the city as war booty and not as a home for its citizens.
