Experimental oncology drugs worth 800,000 euros were stolen on Thursday (but the news has only just been made public) from the pharmacy of the Pascale oncology hospital, in the Rione Alto area. In addition to the economic damage, as the general director, Maurizio di Mauro, points out, the patients, for whom continuity of therapy is essential, have also suffered.
The theft is being investigated by the Carabinieri; according to information made public, the hospital is equipped with security cameras, which could be useful in identifying those responsible. Di Mauro emphasizes that therapeutic continuity will be guaranteed for patients in any case.
"We do not stop in the face of the criminality and vileness of those who take advantage of certain situations and circumstances to cause harm, pursuing their own personal interests, to particularly fragile patients," said di Mauro.
The theft of medicines has plunged the entire hospital into despair. Mainly monoclonal antibodies and experimental drugs have been stolen, but not only. The criminals have also taken some medications intended for the treatment of uveal melanoma. These are products that must be stored in a refrigerator at a controlled temperature. Precisely for this reason, it is suspected that the people who committed the theft belong to an organization capable of properly managing this type of material.
