Turkish authorities have arrested the mayor of Beyoglu in Istanbul, Inan Guney, along with about 40 other local officials, as part of a corruption investigation. Media reports say those detained include his advisers and bodyguard.
Guney is part of the Republican People's Party (CHP), the country's largest opposition party. His arrest follows a series of similar actions against other party leaders, including Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was arrested in March and is seen as President Erdogan's main opponent in the 2028 presidential election.
The waves of arrests have raised suspicions among the international community about the use of justice as a tool for political pressure on the opposition in Turkey.
