US President Donald Trump delivered a lengthy speech at the UN General Assembly, where he highlighted the achievements of his second term. He began by attacking the previous administration, accusing it of a “series of disasters,” and declared that eight months into his second term, the US is “the hottest country in the world.” “This is America’s golden age,” Trump said.
At the center of the speech, he claimed to have brokered the end of seven wars that were considered “unwinnable”: the conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand; Kosovo and Serbia; Pakistan and India; Israel and Iran; Egypt and Ethiopia; Armenia and Azerbaijan; and the bitter war between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. “No other president has done anything that comes close to this. The UN didn’t even try to help,” Trump stressed.
He then spoke of the trade deals he called “historic,” which came after new global tariffs imposed by his administration. Trump cited the United Kingdom as the first country to sign a major trade deal with the United States, adding that the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and “many others” joined later. “America is being respected again, like never before,” he said.
The White House chief recalled that NATO allies have accepted his request to increase defense spending from 2% to 5% of GDP. He also highlighted efforts to strengthen partnerships in the Persian Gulf with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump went on to point to the performance of US markets, record levels of investment, fiscal and regulatory cuts, and tough border security policies, all of which, he said, show that his administration is leading a stronger and more respected America in the world.
