US President Donald Trump has stated that talks have been held with Iranian representatives and that there are "major points of agreement" between the two sides, although he stressed that a final agreement is not yet guaranteed.
Speaking to reporters in Florida, Trump said both sides appear to want to reach a deal, adding that US officials, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have been in contact with Iranian representatives.
The US president also claimed that it was Iran that had requested talks, while adding that if an agreement is reached, it would be a good start for Iran and for stability in the Middle East.
Trump stated that the US goal remains to ban nuclear weapons and achieve peace in the region. He added that Israel would be "very pleased" with the possible results of these talks.
At the same time, Trump said he has not heard directly from Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, and added that he does not want him to be killed.
However, the semi-official Iranian Mehr agency reported that there are no ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington, casting doubt on the US president's statements.
