An Air Canada plane collided with a fire engine on the runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York on Sunday evening, killing the pilot and co-pilot and injuring two other people, according to a law enforcement official cited by CNN.
At approximately 11:40 p.m., a Jazz Aviation flight operating on behalf of Air Canada struck a Port Authority fire and rescue vehicle, which was responding to another incident at the airport.
Two people on board the fire truck were injured. According to officials, the truck was sent to assist another flight that had reported an unknown odor in the cockpit.
Emergency protocols were immediately activated and the airport was temporarily closed to allow emergency teams to intervene and begin investigations.
Jazz Aviation confirmed that it was Air Canada flight 8646 from Montreal. The CRJ-900 aircraft had 72 passengers and 4 crew members on board. Photos and video from the scene show severe damage to the front of the aircraft.
