Protecting American interests/ Trump considers sending mercenaries and private military companies to Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump is in talks to send US private military companies to Ukraine as part of a possible peace deal, the Telegraph reports, citing sources involved in the talks.
According to the newspaper, these companies could help build fortifications to protect US interests, while also preventing Vladimir Putin from violating the ceasefire.
According to the same Washington sources cited by the Telegraph, the plan is being considered alongside a range of other security measures related to air policing, training and naval missions in the Black Sea – which were also being discussed by the so-called “Coalition of the Willing” for Ukraine.
Officials told the media that the main strategy to prevent a repeat of the war was to help rebuild the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including rearming and training soldiers from European NATO allies.
Fortifications and bases on the front line could be built by US private military companies (PMCs) to deter Russian aggression due to the risk of US retaliation, officials told the media.
It is noteworthy that Donald Trump himself has repeatedly emphasized his promise not to send weapons to Ukraine - therefore, the presence of mercenary companies there constitutes an intermediate solution, which would reassure European powers that hope that the White House will take an active role in peace plans.
