The International Committee of the Red Cross has called on states to act urgently to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza, warning that civilians continue to face great hardship despite recent progress under the ceasefire.
"States must seize the momentum generated by the first phase of the agreement between Israel and Hamas to urgently improve the appalling humanitarian conditions in Gaza," said Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the ICRC.
Over the past 15 weeks, the ICRC helped implement the first phase of the agreement by facilitating the return of hostages, detainees and mortal remains.
"The international community must now seize every opportunity to increase efforts that alleviate the suffering in Gaza," Spoljaric appealed.
"This includes easing restrictions on so-called dual-use materials and equipment, such as water pipes and generators, which are essential for restoring essential infrastructure on which people rely," she added.
According to the ICRC, many residents remain displaced and without basic services, living among rubble in wintry conditions. Hospitals, schools, homes and water systems require urgent repairs, while thousands of families are still waiting for information about their missing relatives.
“All states and parties to the conflict have a responsibility to ensure that the borders and protections sanctioned in international humanitarian law are maintained,” Spoljarić said, calling this essential for saving lives, restoring human dignity and sustainable peace.
