Russia has agreed to a partial ceasefire that will halt all attacks on Ukrainian cities for a week, Donald Trump announced. The US president said at a cabinet meeting that he had asked Vladimir Putin “not to fire on Kiev and various cities for a week. And he agreed to do that.”
Under the ongoing bombardment of Ukraine’s energy system, millions of people have been left without power or electricity in temperatures well below freezing. “They’ve never experienced such cold,” Mr. Trump said, adding that it was “very good” that Putin had stopped the attacks. There has been no confirmation yet from Russia that it intends to stop the strikes on Kiev and other cities.
Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Wednesday that Moscow was planning another barrage of large-scale attacks, despite plans for further US-brokered talks over the weekend.
Putin has previously made deals with Mr. Trump privately, but has then changed his mind or diluted those deals.
